Somewhere around this age, youth sports change. There are tryouts, travel teams, rankings and parents who talk about scholarships for eleven-year-olds.
Your child still needs the same thing they needed at six: a parent, not a second coach. The stakes only feel higher because the adults raised them.
After a tough performance, your child studies your face. Start with ‘I’m glad I got to watch you’ before asking what they learned.
“I am here because I love watching you play. I do not need you to be perfect.”
Agree on one sentence you will always use after competition, win or lose.
The coach says one thing. You think something different. Your instinct is to yell your version across the floor.
Now your child has two coaches talking at once. They are not learning faster — they are deciding which adult to disappoint.
If Coach asks for patience but you shout ‘attack,’ your child must choose an adult. Ask later, ‘What was Coach asking you to see?’
“What did Coach want you to do there?”
For one full week, give encouragement only during play and save questions for home.
This is the age where kids grow at wildly different rates. The biggest eleven-year-old is not the best fifteen-year-old.
Comparison teaches your child that their worth moves up and down with a ranking. Development does not work on that schedule.
When your child says a teammate is faster, answer, ‘That is one of their strengths. What is one skill you can practice this week?’
“What did you do better today than last week?”
Choose one personal measure—accuracy, effort, decisions, or recovery—and review it weekly.
Your child should not have to check your face before deciding whether they are allowed to feel good about their meet.
You can care deeply without losing control. When an official misses a call, your child does not need to carry your anger on top of their own.
A call goes against the team. Unclench your hands, lower your voice, and model the reset you want your child to use.
“I didn't love that call either. Let's see what happens next.”
Pick a family reset cue such as ‘breathe and next job’ and use it consistently.
The competition ends and you have seventeen things to say. Don't.
Your child is already replaying it. They know about the mistake, the missed opportunity and the moments that felt hard. They do not need an interview.
Your child gets in angry and silent. Say, ‘Food, quiet, or talk?’ and honor the answer without withdrawing warmth.
“Did you have fun?”“What was your favorite part?”“Want to talk about it or just chill?”
Set a later check-in time so silence is space, not avoidance.
A player can win and play poorly. A player can lose and play the best meet of their life.
Wanting to win is healthy. A winning mentality means preparing well, competing through difficulty, doing your role and responding to the next play without blaming. If the final score becomes the only thing that counts, kids stop taking the risks that make them better.
A loss can still contain better spacing, braver decisions, or a skill attempted under pressure. Help your child find the evidence.
“What did you learn today?”
After each week, record one skill attempted, one improvement, and one next practice goal.
Officials make mistakes. Coaches make mistakes. Players make mistakes. You will too.
The kid in the other jersey is somebody's child, with a parent in those stands hoping they do well.
If a teammate is mocked in a group chat, tell your child not to join, save the messages, support the teammate, and tell a trusted adult if it continues or threatens safety.
“I disagree with the call, but we're moving on.”
Ask who feels included on the team, who may not, and one action your child can take.
Year-round schedules, two teams at once, private lessons and tournaments every weekend add up fast at this age.
Tired kids stop loving the meet before they stop playing it. Rest is part of training, not a lack of commitment.
Three weeks of dread, irritability, poor sleep, or unexplained aches deserve a calm conversation—not another clinic or tournament.
“Do you still look forward to going?”
Ask ‘What gives you energy and what drains it?’ then change one part of the schedule for two weeks.
Between roughly nine and thirteen, two children the same age can be four years apart in physical development. Add the birthday effect — kids born early in the cutoff year are bigger, stronger and get picked more — and what looks like a talent gap is often just a calendar gap.
Early developers may be chosen, coached and praised more. Later developers can build skill, balance and problem-solving because they cannot rely only on size. When growth gaps narrow, those skills still matter.
Size at eleven does not determine who will thrive later. Consistent, healthy practice and continued enjoyment give athletes the best chance to develop.
A growth spurt can make a once-smooth player temporarily awkward. Explain the change, protect rest, and keep expectations realistic.
“Your body will catch up. Your habits are what I'm watching.”
Measure one technical habit rather than size, speed, or selection for the next month.
This is the age where kids start measuring: who is stronger, who is faster, who got moved up. Left alone, that measuring turns into putting people down, because it is the fastest way to feel better about your own gaps.
Teach the opposite habit. Naming what a teammate is good at does not shrink what your child is good at. Everybody on that roster — including the strongest player — has a weakness they're working on.

“They may be stronger than you. You understand the action better than anyone out there. Both are true.”
Ask who feels included on the team, who may not, and one action your child can take.
At this age your child can learn to ask for themselves, and coaches respect it enormously. Your role is preparation and transportation, not representation.
Coach them through it: wait 24 hours after a meet, ask at a calm moment, and ask about improvement, not fairness. “Why don't I play more?” puts a coach on defense. “What do I need to do to earn more time?” gets an actual answer.
If you do need to speak to the coach yourself, keep it to the things adults handle: safety, health, scheduling and how your child is spoken to. Let your child lead role conversations when developmentally ready.
Your child expected a larger role because of program fees or one strong game. Explain that fees provide access to coaching, not a guaranteed position, and that coaches evaluate repeated practice habits, effort, readiness, team conduct, and team needs.
“Let's figure out what you want to ask, and then you ask it.”
Help your child ask, ‘How can I improve my opportunities?’ Turn the answer into one skill goal, one practice-behavior goal, and a three-week follow-up.
Children this age can begin speaking for themselves, but a difficult conversation still needs practice. Help them separate facts from guesses, choose a calm time and ask one question that can produce a useful answer.
Decide beforehand whether your role is rehearsal, quiet support nearby or direct adult action. Safety, discrimination, repeated bullying and serious health concerns are not practice opportunities for a child to handle alone.
Your child wants more opportunity. Help them say, ‘Coach, what is one skill and one practice habit that would improve my opportunities?’ Then let them ask.
“What happened, what do you need and what question will you ask?”
Write a three-line conversation plan: one fact, one question and one next step.
A useful meeting ends with something observable. Turn broad feedback such as ‘be more confident’ into actions a child can practice, count or review.
Check progress without hovering. Improvement may earn trust before it changes a role, and a fair plan is not a guaranteed outcome.
Coach asks for quicker decisions and stronger practice focus. Your child tracks one decision drill and arrives ready for three weeks before asking for a review.
“What will we practice, how will we measure it and when will we check back?”
Create a three-week plan with two measures and one date for the athlete to check back with the coach.
Your child doesn't need a perfect parent. They need a present one.
They don't need you to fix every problem. They need you to help them learn how to handle problems. They don't need another coach. They need their parent.
Be the adult you want your child to become.
