Families and athletes should know what effort, respect, attendance, safety and communication look like before the first competition. For this age, center ownership, wellbeing and measurable progress.
Put expectations in plain language and explain what will happen when the standard is missed. Consistency builds trust; surprise punishment does not.
Athletes help define how the team handles effort, communication, online conduct, hazing and accountability, then adults state non-negotiable safety rules.
Here is what you can expect from me, and what I will expect from you.
Publish role criteria, discipline steps, reporting options and review dates.
State the standard, invite questions, then let athletes own the response.
Describe what you saw, name the adjustment, and notice the next honest attempt. A hard lesson can include repetition, accountability, and an uncomfortable truth; it must still protect dignity and safety.
When you give extra time to develop an athlete, ask them to meet that investment with attention, preparation, honest effort, and follow-through. Do not confuse high expectations with permission to humiliate.
Instead of supplying every answer, ask a teen to review the rep, name the evidence and choose the next adjustment.

Build athlete-led review into one practice block each week.
A winning mentality is competitive, prepared and solution-focused. It does not deny disappointment or blame others; it turns quickly toward the next controllable action.
After a mistake, regulate yourself first. Your face and voice tell the team whether errors are information or danger. Praise athletes who reset, perform an unglamorous role, and help a teammate recover.
Under recruiting or result pressure, shorten communication to a known cue and save analysis for a regulated break.

Practice individual performance routines until athletes can run them independently.
When an athlete asks about a role or opportunities to compete, answer honestly and specifically. Explain that decisions reflect the full body of work: practice quality, effort, readiness, decisions, response to coaching, team conduct, and what the lineup needs—not program fees, family expectations, or one game.
An athlete may not be the best fit for the role they prefer. Name the current team role without diminishing ambition, then give no more than two controllable priorities and a follow-up date.
An athlete completed the plan but the role did not change. Explain what improved, what still blocks opportunity and what honest options exist.

Confirm two measures and a four-week follow-up in writing.
A concerned parent usually wants safety, fairness, clarity or reassurance. Listen for the real concern before defending a decision.
Use a 24-hour rule after competition, meet privately, discuss their athlete rather than others, and end with the next action each adult will take.
A parent fears a decision will harm recruiting. Separate the long-term worry from current evidence and return ownership to the athlete.
I hear the concern. Let's separate what happened from what we can change next.
Agree on what the athlete handles and what requires adult action.
Model the respectful control you expect from athletes. Ask for clarification only through the sport's permitted process, then return attention to the team.
If there is an immediate safety issue, state it clearly and use the league's escalation process. Disagreement alone is not an emergency.
A serious conduct or safety concern occurs. Protect athletes, use the formal process and document facts without turning the moment into theater.
Please clarify the ruling so I can coach the next action.
Know who can stop play, file a report and provide immediate protection.
Ask about school, sleep, recovery, belonging and enjoyment. Changes in mood, appetite, attendance or behavior deserve curiosity, not a toughness speech.
Pain, harassment, discrimination, abuse and serious mental-health concerns require adult action through qualified health professionals and the organization's safeguarding process.
A teen reports injury, hazing, discrimination, threats or hopelessness. Listen, assess immediate safety and involve the right adult or professional.
How are you doing outside the sport?
Record facts, report through required channels and follow up against retaliation.
Give every athlete a useful ending: what they contributed, what improved and one realistic next step. A season review should not be a surprise verdict.
Thank families, officials and assistants. Name the culture the group built, not only the record.
A senior, cut athlete or injured athlete may be losing an identity. Name what remains theirs and help connect them to what comes next.

Give every athlete an honest contribution, growth record and transition plan.
Teen athletes should know how to request feedback, challenge an idea respectfully and report a serious concern without risking retaliation.
Define the ordinary performance channel and the separate confidential path for injury, hazing, discrimination, abuse, threats and mental-health safety.
A teen disputes a role and separately reports retaliatory comments. Handle the role with performance evidence and the retaliation through the safeguarding process.

Review the team’s performance-conversation and safety-reporting paths with athletes and families.
After sustained work, explain the evidence and realistic options: recommit, contribute differently, develop in another role or evaluate another healthy setting.
Do not protect your roster by making promises you cannot support. Help the athlete make an informed choice while honoring current commitments and safety.
A teen improves but remains behind established role criteria. Explain the current contribution, alternate opportunities and what another setting might reasonably offer.

Prepare a written summary of evidence, role, options and timing for every major end-of-cycle review.
Athletes may forget the score. They remember whether your instruction was clear, your standards were fair and your care was real.
Be positive without becoming vague. Be firm without becoming cruel. Listen, decide, explain and follow through.
