Families and athletes should know what effort, respect, attendance, safety and communication look like before the first competition. For this age, center emotional safety, simple choices and joyful participation.
Put expectations in plain language and explain what will happen when the standard is missed. Consistency builds trust; surprise punishment does not.
A nervous child will not enter the first drill. Greet them at eye level, offer two safe choices and let courage begin with one small step.
Here is what you can expect from me, and what I will expect from you.
Send families three child-sized team rules plus clear water, bathroom, weather and safety procedures.
Give one direction, demonstrate it, then let them try.
Describe what you saw, name the adjustment, and notice the next honest attempt. A hard lesson can include repetition, accountability, and an uncomfortable truth; it must still protect dignity and safety.
When you give extra time to develop an athlete, ask them to meet that investment with attention, preparation, honest effort, and follow-through. Do not confuse high expectations with permission to humiliate.
A child drifts during directions. Move closer, say their name kindly, show one action and ask them to copy it.
Pause. Here is what I saw. Here is your next job.
Use one cue and one demonstration for every drill this week.
A winning mentality is competitive, prepared and solution-focused. It does not deny disappointment or blame others; it turns quickly toward the next controllable action.
After a mistake, regulate yourself first. Your face and voice tell the team whether errors are information or danger. Praise athletes who reset, perform an unglamorous role, and help a teammate recover.
A child cries after a mistake. Offer a safe pause, name the feeling and give a choice: rejoin now or after one minute.
Breathe. Find your next job.
Plan one calming cue and one no-shame re-entry option before competition.
When an athlete asks about a role or opportunities to compete, answer honestly and specifically. Explain that decisions reflect the full body of work: practice quality, effort, readiness, decisions, response to coaching, team conduct, and what the lineup needs—not program fees, family expectations, or one meet.
An athlete may not be the best fit for the role they prefer. Name the current team role without diminishing ambition, then give no more than two controllable priorities and a follow-up date.
‘I want to quit’ turns out to mean a teammate keeps laughing. Address the behavior and supervision, not the child’s toughness.

End every concern with one safe change and a specific check-in.
A concerned parent usually wants safety, fairness, clarity or reassurance. Listen for the real concern before defending a decision.
Use a 24-hour rule after competition, meet privately, discuss their athlete rather than others, and end with the next action each adult will take.
A parent shouts conflicting directions. Explain privately that two voices confuse young players and agree on encouragement-only sidelines.
I hear the concern. Let's separate what happened from what we can change next.
Reconnect after one week with one observation, not a verdict.
Model the respectful control you expect from athletes. Ask for clarification only through the sport's permitted process, then return attention to the team.
If there is an immediate safety issue, state it clearly and use the league's escalation process. Disagreement alone is not an emergency.
A routine call is missed. Ask once if allowed, accept the answer and turn back to the children with a settled face.

Review the difference between disagreement and immediate danger before the season.
Ask about school, sleep, recovery, belonging and enjoyment. Changes in mood, appetite, attendance or behavior deserve curiosity, not a toughness speech.
Pain, harassment, discrimination, abuse and serious mental-health concerns require adult action through qualified health professionals and the organization's safeguarding process.
A child reports a scary secret. Stay calm, ensure safety, record their exact words and follow the safeguarding process.
How are you doing outside the sport?
Know the designated safety contact and emergency steps before a disclosure occurs.
Give every athlete a useful ending: what they contributed, what improved and one realistic next step. A season review should not be a surprise verdict.
Thank families, officials and assistants. Name the culture the group built, not only the record.
A child had few highlights but welcomed every newcomer. Name that contribution and one skill they improved.

Young athletes borrow calm from adults. Preview what will happen, demonstrate one action and name who can help.
Preparation should make room for nerves, tears and retries without lowering the safety or kindness standard.
A child freezes before a new drill. Let them watch one turn, try beside an assistant and join independently when ready.

Identify one likely stress point in the next session and plan the cue, choice and helper.
After a concern, tell the child and family what you will change and when you will check again.
Document and escalate repeated harm, injury or unsafe adult behavior instead of treating one conversation as closure.
After exclusion in a drill, you change groups, supervise the transition and privately check with the child after the next two practices.
“We tried this change. Tell me what felt better or stayed hard.”
Put one follow-up date beside every behavior, belonging or safety plan.
Athletes may forget the score. They remember whether your instruction was clear, your standards were fair and your care was real.
Be positive without becoming vague. Be firm without becoming cruel. Listen, decide, explain and follow through.
