Families and athletes should know what effort, respect, attendance, safety and communication look like before the first competition. For this age, center skill growth, belonging and shared responsibility.
Put expectations in plain language and explain what will happen when the standard is missed. Consistency builds trust; surprise punishment does not.
A family questions favoritism. Show the published role criteria, current evidence and review date instead of becoming defensive.
Here is what you can expect from me, and what I will expect from you.
Write standards an eleven-year-old can repeat and families can see.
Give one clear correction and ask the athlete to repeat the next action.
Describe what you saw, name the adjustment, and notice the next honest attempt. A hard lesson can include repetition, accountability, and an uncomfortable truth; it must still protect dignity and safety.
When you give extra time to develop an athlete, ask them to meet that investment with attention, preparation, honest effort, and follow-through. Do not confuse high expectations with permission to humiliate.
An athlete repeats an error. Ask what they saw, demonstrate one adjustment and let them explain the next attempt.

Give each athlete one observable weekly goal and a Friday check-in.
A winning mentality is competitive, prepared and solution-focused. It does not deny disappointment or blame others; it turns quickly toward the next controllable action.
After a mistake, regulate yourself first. Your face and voice tell the team whether errors are information or danger. Praise athletes who reset, perform an unglamorous role, and help a teammate recover.
An athlete spirals after a mistake. Use the practiced reset—exhale, name it without judgment, choose one cue—then move on.

When an athlete asks about a role or opportunities to compete, answer honestly and specifically. Explain that decisions reflect the full body of work: practice quality, effort, readiness, decisions, response to coaching, team conduct, and what the lineup needs—not program fees, family expectations, or one game.
An athlete may not be the best fit for the role they prefer. Name the current team role without diminishing ambition, then give no more than two controllable priorities and a follow-up date.
An athlete says teammates exclude them online. Save evidence, assess safety and stop repeated targeting rather than calling it drama.

Create a written protection and follow-up plan with the family and organization when needed.
A concerned parent usually wants safety, fairness, clarity or reassurance. Listen for the real concern before defending a decision.
Use a 24-hour rule after competition, meet privately, discuss their athlete rather than others, and end with the next action each adult will take.
A parent challenges opportunity after competition. Schedule a calm meeting, listen fully and discuss only their athlete against known standards.
I hear the concern. Let's separate what happened from what we can change next.
Leave with two controllable actions and a three-week review date.
Model the respectful control you expect from athletes. Ask for clarification only through the sport's permitted process, then return attention to the team.
If there is an immediate safety issue, state it clearly and use the league's escalation process. Disagreement alone is not an emergency.
A call feels unfair. Ask through the permitted channel, then model the immediate reset expected from athletes.
Please clarify the ruling so I can coach the next action.
Document only patterns involving conduct or safety that warrant formal review.
Ask about school, sleep, recovery, belonging and enjoyment. Changes in mood, appetite, attendance or behavior deserve curiosity, not a toughness speech.
Pain, harassment, discrimination, abuse and serious mental-health concerns require adult action through qualified health professionals and the organization's safeguarding process.
A once-eager athlete dreads practice for weeks and sleep changes. Ask what gives and drains energy, then involve family and qualified support.
How are you doing outside the sport?
Change one schedule pressure for two weeks and review honestly.
Give every athlete a useful ending: what they contributed, what improved and one realistic next step. A season review should not be a surprise verdict.
Thank families, officials and assistants. Name the culture the group built, not only the record.
An athlete misses the desired role but improved reliability and skill. Tell the truth about both without making a future promise.

Name contribution, growth evidence and one offseason priority for every athlete.
Athletes need a predictable path for questions about roles, teammates and feedback. Explain when to ask, what evidence helps and how you will answer.
Invite growing ownership while making clear that safety, bullying, discrimination and health concerns can come straight to an adult.
An athlete asks why a role changed. Thank them for asking directly, review the evidence and agree on two controllable priorities.

Teach and rehearse one role question and one teammate-conflict opening this month.
If you set a development plan, observe the named behaviors and return to the conversation on time. Moving the standard destroys trust.
Recognize improvement honestly even when team needs or another athlete’s sustained performance means the role does not change.
An athlete completes the three-week plan. You name the visible progress, the remaining gap and the next fair option without comparing them by name to a teammate.

Add review dates to every individual plan and reserve five minutes to prepare evidence beforehand.
Athletes may forget the score. They remember whether your instruction was clear, your standards were fair and your care was real.
Be positive without becoming vague. Be firm without becoming cruel. Listen, decide, explain and follow through.
